All the readings from Scripture for this Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost point us toward the last days and divine judgment on the fallen world. The gospel passage from Mark 13:1-13 looks ahead to the destruction of Jerusalem and the close of the age. Some aspects of these words of Jesus can be applied to the disasters following the great Jewish revolt against Rome around 70 AD. They can also be applied to events during many transitional or unstable periods in human history. Most of all, these prophecies apply to the final end of earthly history. Our Lord warns against being misled by false Messiahs and jumping to premature conclusions. He warns of the persecution of believers by governing authorities and of social disintegration.
Despite the somber mood and warnings in these prophecies, Christ also promises strength from the Holy Spirit and salvation for those who endure to the end. For Christians, Christ's prophecies help prepare us for all times of trial in this world, for our personal difficulties in life, and for the final judgment. Spiritual awareness and preparation are the best ways to face any difficulties. So let us remain observant, aware, and faithful!
