The Gospel for this Sunday is from Luke 24:13-35, the lovely account of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus encountering the risen Christ. This account brings up a number of interesting topics, such as the identity of these disciples, the slowness of the disciples to believe, the change in Jesus' appearance after His resurrection, and the importance of breaking bread. All these topics are fascinating.
However, let us focus on Christ's role in interpreting Scripture. This encounter stresses the Christ-centered message of all Scripture. Directly and indirectly, the Bible comes from God the Son, the Eternal Word, and the writings all point us to Christ. God's self-revelation and redeeming work is about Jesus. God's work through His only Son Jesus Christ is at the heart of the entire biblical message, and it can only be properly understood through Him. In other words, the risen Christ's manifestation on the Emmaus road shows that we do not really appreciate Scripture without Him. Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, is the key to understanding all Holy Scripture. He is the one who makes the ancient words burn in our hearts!
